Grandad’s
Teeth is a children’s picture book written and illustrated by Rod Clement.
It is a funny and fantastical story about a grandad who discovers his teeth
have been stolen and the mystery embroils all involved, including family, the
police and even the entire town. It is a light-hearted and fun story with very
detailed illustrations and a twist at the end, which is likely to be thoroughly
enjoyed by the whole class. The story is very over-the-top but its creative
charm is very endearing for both child and adult readers.
The book has very detailed illustrations as well as a
multi-layered narrative. There is plenty of text on each page to allow in-depth
reading exercises for students. The story introduces several textual themes,
such as foreshadowing, within the framework of the mystery teeth thief, so
students can advance their basic knowledge of narrative. Students will also
expand their ability to read with varying voices and tones, as grandad speaks
with a strong lisp without his teeth.
This book is best suited for early primary students and can
be used for many different activities. Ideally, Year’s 1-2 would benefit from Grandad’s Teeth the most.
