The
Bugliest Bug is a children’s picture book written by Carol Diggory and
illustrated by Scott Nash. It is an extremely colourful and fun book about a
dragonfly leading his fellow bugs against an invading spider army to become the
bugliest bug of them all!
The book’s rhythm is a big part of the narrative of this
book. The rhyming scheme creates a pattern for the reader throughout the book
which aids in early childhood reading. This book is also a helpful aid in
educating students about bugs, for example, through the use of the word “arachnids”
instead of spiders. This is a way for students to extend their existing
knowledge with a fun, engaging and colourful text such as The Bugliest Bug. The illustrations in this book are extremely
eye-catching with lots of bright colours and are often full-page or double page
pictures.
Students could also examine some of the many bugs used in the
illustrations as a link with Science or draw their own bugs as link with Art.
This book is a good basis for many engaging learning experiences. In this case,
The Bugliest Bug makes a good primary
text and could be used for any year level within the primary strand.
