The Six Little Possums and the Babysitter written by Marci McGill
and illustrated by Cyndy Szekeres would be great for the younger student reader
who is looking into beginning reading easy novels. This book uses characters
that emulate human personality but take the shape of animals that children are
likely to know. The children are represented by possums and the babysitter is a
mole. The narrator is in third person so the book would also be great to read
to students.
The names of the characters are
all herbs and spices such as Parsley, Pepper and Sage. The story may be used to
teach young children some courtesies and manners such as being polite and helping
set up the dinner table. In other words the book portrays many ideals. The book
is very appropriate for young children as the scenario of a babysitter, who is
different, may in fact be something that the children identify with.
This book is full of hidden
messages and meaning. It is written around being familiar to children in an
attempt to connect with the young readers. The illustrations are equally
important, if not more influential than the text in this book. They show
expressions, feeling, actions and settings which is why this book would be
classified as a picture book.
