Something Special written
by Emily Rodda and illustrated by Noela Young is the story of a young girl who
becomes attached to donated clothing items to be sold at a fundraiser. Sam
manages to imagine the past owners of the clothing items. She imagines all the
‘Specials’ and magically communicates with the people that owned them and the
stories that they hold.
The illustrations are used to highlight the magic of certain
situations. In particular is the time Sam spent in the room with the
‘specials’. The illustrations bring the words to life using plain charcoal
sketches.
The novel is a story that will relate to children of ages
from 8 to 15. There will be a particular appropriateness towards young female
readers, however this is not limited. The dialogue used by Rodda is mostly to
convey what was said with slight weight towards emotions and thought.
