Daniel Kelly – Picture Book: The Pop-up Book of Gnomes

The Pop-up Book of Gnomes is a very interesting book as it does not simply have an author and illustrator. It has and art director, a designer, a paper engineer and a hand writer. This book is extremely hands on. It requires sound reading skills but nevertheless would be an amazing read for people of any schooling age as much of the illustration and engineering creates a fantastic story on its own.

The book is a pop-up book unlike any other I have seen. It pops out and up, it slides left and right and it turns and spins with cogs and piston motions. The paper work is truly spectacular.

The handwriting is a little difficult to read but is really well done. The theme of the book is basically all about gnomes and their daily lives as well as a few complications along the way. This theme may be appropriate for the younger audience but the text is definitely too difficult for the young reader so this book would be perfect for shared reading where an adult reads to the child or teacher to the class.

There has been no lack of attention to detail; in this book and it creates a truly unique reading experience.
