A Night in the
Dinosaur Graveyard written by A.J. Wood and illustrated by Wayne Andersen
is a very modern and exciting picture book. The book is set out in a square
shape and each page opens to reveal a full spread. The illustrations are
amazing. They are slightly cartooned but they still feel very realistic.
The story is told in third person narration. There is a
reasonably large amount of dialogue for a picture book which is mainly used to
convey the thoughts and sayings of each of the characters. The illustrations
are extremely important in this picture book. They are the main driving force
to the story with the words only acting and a guide for the reader to follow.
This book is unique in the fact that it contains holograms
of dinosaurs/fossils. This book is very appealing to children for this very reason.
This is largely a book that young males would be interested in but as the story
incorporates two young children, one boy and one girl, it is certainly open for
both sexes.
The story itself is simple but allows for the readers
imagination to influence the story strongly. This may act as a good
introduction to dinosaurs in early schooling as the book does still retain the
correct names for the dinosaurs including Stegosaurus, Triceratops,
Tyrannosaurus rex and more.
It would prove most appropriate for ages 5-8.
