Hayley Wells - Adolescent Novel: Deadly!

Deadly!

SUMMARY:
Paul Jennings presents a strange and unrealistic adolescent novel called Deadly! which is part three of a series. Told from two points of view, Amy and Sprocket are on a mission to find the baby and Sprocket's father. Through a series of events, Amy and Sprocket discover the secret of the tea and must leave the village quickly! This is an exciting read for students as the genre of it is adventure and the theme is friendship. Friendship is shown when Amy and Sprocket must work together in order to find their lost families. Published in the year 2000, Jennings immediately catches the reader's attention with its roller-coaster of events. As discussed within the workshop, a story shape can show the reader how the story looks when the suspense is rising and when the story is at its climax. USE IN CLASS
The adenturous novel can be used within a year 6 class looking at:
- A particular chapter and discussing the vocabulary and the author's choice of words
- Role play where students can be separated into different groups and are given a chapter to act out, and present to the class after practcing lines.
- Paragraph structure, where to stop and create a new one

LIKS WITH ACARA 
Deadly! can be used in a year 6 class to discuss the vocabulary within the novel as it relates to the key idea, "Investigate how vocabulary choices, including evaluative language can express shades of meaning, feeling and opinion," as stated by ACARA (2012), within the strand Laguage and sub-trand Expressing and Develping Ideas.
